Story from an anonymous person.
I run a small shop in one of the older buildings in downtown Greensburg. Like a lot of the buildings downtown, ours has been here for a long time and has probably been home to all kinds of businesses over the years.
We’ve had some strange things happen in the shop, but none of us would really describe it as scary. At this point, it’s almost become part of working here.
One of the first things we noticed was merchandise moving.
We’ll straighten everything before leaving, then come in the next morning and find something somewhere it shouldn’t be. Sometimes an item has moved on a shelf. Other times something we know was sitting on a counter will be somewhere else entirely.
There are also knocks. They seem to come from different parts of the store, and there’s never anyone there when we check. We’ve gotten pretty used to those. Every once in a while a customer will hear one and ask what it was. Usually we just shrug because we don’t have an answer.
The voices are probably the strangest part. They usually happen around closing time when there’s only one person left in the shop. You suddenly hear what sounds like two people having a conversation somewhere else in the building. There’s definitely a man and a woman. You can hear the rhythm of a normal conversation—the man will say something, then the woman answers, and it continues back and forth. But no matter how hard you listen, you can never actually understand what they’re saying. The really odd thing is that the voices always seem to be coming from somewhere other than where you are. If you’re near the front of the store, they sound like they’re farther toward the back. Walk toward the back, and suddenly they seem farther away again. We’ve tried following the voices before, but we’ve never found anyone.
They also tend to start around the same time in the evening. It doesn’t happen every single day, but it happens more often than it doesn’t.
Most of the activity seems to happen when someone is alone, either early in the morning before everyone else arrives or in the evening after everyone else has left. Still, we’re definitely not the only ones who have noticed strange things. Customers have heard noises too, which at least makes us feel a little better about it.
After a while, the staff just stopped making a big deal about any of it.
If something knocks, somebody might say, “Good morning.”
If merchandise has moved, we put it back.
And when the man and woman start their evening conversation, we usually just let them talk.
Sometimes we’ll even comment back to them.
Whatever is here doesn’t seem threatening. We’ve never felt like it was trying to scare us or make us leave. It’s more like two other people happen to share the building with us. We just can’t see them. Most days, you don’t think much about it.
But every once in a while, when you’re closing the shop by yourself and you hear that man and woman start talking somewhere behind you, it still catches you off guard.
